At dawn on Sunday, March 20, two Tunisian Army soldiers were injured during search operations on Jebel (mount) Sammama in the Governorate of Kasserine, one soldier was wounded when a landmine went off while the other was wounded in an exchange of fire.The incident comes one day after Defense Ministry spokesman Belhassen Oueslati reported that a soldier was wounded in clashes with militants on Saturday morning. Search operations were reinforced, including aerial patrols by helicopter, leading up to Sunday morning's incident. According to MosaiqueFM, all three were treated at the Kasserine regional hospital. The soldier wounded on Saturday has been released, while according to the same source the soldier wounded in today's landmine blast had to have his leg amputated. Search operations in the area are reported to be ongoing.
Militants belonging to Okba Ibn Nafaa are known to operate in the mountainous region along the Tunisia Algeria border, (which includes Jebel Salloum, Jebel Mghilla, Jebel Sammama and the more well-known Jebel Chaambi,) and straddles the Governorates of Sidi Bouzid and Kasserine.
